Two Duos - One Country

The first message straight from the hub of the 2008 ISU Figure Skating Championships:

Sasha and Roman Zaretsky are 9th after the compulsory dance

Roman ( from the skating lounge after he was cheering on to his team mates Hayley Ann Sacks and Vadim Akolzin during their short programme and a few hours after he and Sasha skated a  fiery Argentinian tango):

-We are pleased with our start at these Worlds and hope we will be keeping it up in the next rounds of the competition.

Hayley Ann Sacks and Vadim Akolzin have made it through to the free programme in the pairs competition, which was their goal at the first Worlds for their team, and received a wonderfully warm welcome and loud applause from the audience. Vadim has competed in the Worlds before, but the pair teamed up only a few months ago.

Hayley, Vadim, Andrei ( coach)

-We are just thrilled!

A  backstage observation:

Tanith Belbin and Benjamen Agosto look confident despite their flaw at the compulsories promising a head-on battle in the original dance on Wednesday. We will keep you posted.

2nd Day of the Worlds

By the Skin of Her Blades

Tamar Katz finished 24th in the ladies' short and got through to the free programme tomorrow. I asked her coach Peter Burrows about his impression of her skate today:

-Tamar did a beautiful triple flip and a triple lutz-double toe loop combination, but when she set up for the triple axel going into the spread eagle position to get more points for that, her blade got caught in some small object on the ice.

We can only add that the ladies' short was a tough competition with 53 contestants - more than in any other division. Just one example will say it all - Tamar is in the same group with former European Champion Julia Sebestyen, 2008 European medalist Laura Lepisto and European top-ten skater Elene Gedevaneshvili.

Pairs - Free Skate

The pairs event concluded crowning the new World Champions Alyona Savchenko and Robin Szolkovy. Our team finished in the 17th position in their first Worlds. Coach Andrei Buskov comments:

-Hayley should have fought more to land the jumps she just gave up on, and that's what we are going to work on in the future. But the throw jump was clean, and the pair's alignment and flow across the ice have improved.

Hayley ( happy but frowning at herself):

-I am so proud to represent Israel and to be here for the World Championships. I simply had the time of my life, but I know I have to work hard to improve.

Another backstage observation:

The beautiful Isabel Delobel has a beautiful twin sister and is in the first place going into the original dance Thursday afternoon. Look forward to more updates from the Worlds.

Worlds - Day 3

A Middle Eastern Original Dance with a Forward Score

Sasha and Roman Zaretsky have retained their 9th place in today's original dance programme and got a season's best of 58.10. Their coach Galit Chait comments:

-Sasha and Roman skated an emotional and technically demanding programme getting level 4 for all the elements.

Ladies First

The ladies' competition, which used to conclude the World Championships event, was scheduled prior to men's competition this year. Tamar Katz finished 22nd and ahead of 30 other competitors. Coach Peter Burrows comments:

-Tamar missed two jumps at the beginning, but kept going and skated the rest of the programme well.

21/03/08

Worlds - Day 4

Men - Short Programme

Maxim Shipov was 34th in men's short programme among 45 competitors and at his first Worlds Championships getting a total score of 44.32 improving his previous result by 5 points.

Ice Dancing - Free Dance

Sasha and Roman Zaretsky surged to the World's top 10 in ice dancing performing a passionate free dance and retaining their 9th position. Their total score is 179.22. Roma has not yet recovered from the cold he caught before the Worlds and hearing him coughing badly after the free dance, I decided to let him get his breath back and wait for his and Sasha's comments later on. Will keep you posted.
